Cariel Vanilla
Around 1995 the young man who was to become Cariel’s Master Blender, Peter Carlson set himself an audacious challenge – to produce the most delicious flavoured vodka in the world. After much contemplation he decided that he’d use a flavour never before used in vodka – and in fact the world’s most expensive (and, paradoxically, ubiquitous) spice – vanilla.
Even the supremely patient Peter was not prepared for the 5 year journey leading to a product he was finally happy with. The secret in the end was simple: two vanillas. First the traditionally creamy vanillas from the vanilla orchids found in Kerala in south-western India. Then, and this was the true genius, the more floral, even fruity vanilla from Madagascar. And that was it. When it was finally launched in 2000, the world was ready for it. The mixology renaissance emanating from London wanted quality spirits with handcrafted origins as a base for delicious drinks Cariel Vanilla Vodka had all that in spades, and more. Today an almost dewy-eyed Peter Carlson will tell you the almost mythical stories about bars such as The Townhouse, and the creation of iconic drinks such as the “Maverick Martini” , which then metamorphosed into the legendary “Pornstar Martini”. The rest, as they say, is history. Here’s to the future.
